All religions address the question of trust. What do we rely upon to guide us through life's uncertainties? Is our trust centered in a holy book? The creeds of a specific tradition? A guru or a priesthood? Or...is there another way? In this sermon, I'll try to articulate a liberal religious response to the question of trust. The CHOIR will sing and there will be regular RE classes.

Children's Arts Workshop

The public is invited to a Hands On Visual Art Workshop for Day of the Dead on Saturday November 7, 2009 from 10am-1pm at the church. The Day of the Dead/El Día de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

Led by artist Caryl Henry Alexander, participants will create a traditional altar honoring the deceased. Each student will make their own Folkart such as Huichol yarn painting, sugar skulls, paper flowers and papel picado/ cut paper banners.

The workshop is $35 and is best suited to students from grades 3 and up, unless accompanied by an adult.

As part of the congregation's visioning process, we will be considering our name-Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church-and whether it ought to be changed. In this service I would like to offer some background on each element of this name. My intent is not to take a position but, rather, to offer perspective on issues involved in considering a name change. GRACE GRIFFITH and LYNN HOLLYFIELD will sing. There will be CHILDREN’S CHAPEL followed by regular RE classes.

The Thanksgiving season is concerned with gratitude. On one level, we are encouraged to be aware of the things in our lives for which we are thankful. But gratitude is also a basic religious attitude. It's a way of saying "Yes!" to existence. In this sermon I would like to reflect upon how a sense of gratitude can enrich our lives. Guest at Your Table boxes will be distributed and there will be regular RE classes.

The punch line from the old Vermont joke "You can't get there from here!" evokes some of the feeling we can have looking from Thanksgiving to the Holiday season. So much to do and so many expectations. This year at Davies, our children are learning about world faiths and we will be including in our worship calendar both a Christmas Eve service and a service celebrating Kwanzaa and its seven principles. There are cross cutting themes in what our children are learning that can help us know where "there" is and the "getting there" worth the effort. The Rev. Preston Mears, with supervision from Religious Education committee members Laurie and Rachel, will lead the service. There will be regular RE classes.
