In this class, each participant will prepare one full hide with the wet-scrape method, one full hide with the dry-scrape method, and one rawhide. That's three full hides completed in one class! Techniques for bark and fur tanning will also be covered and we will use both modern and primitive tools to give you a full experience of the possibilities.

Nature Awareness Day Camp at Camp Tonkawa

We get the children to create their own "NATURE JOURNAL" to help them remember what they learned from the day and then continue to add things that they find in their own backyards. Please have each child bring their own notebook or sketch book along with pencils. The children can either draw, trace or color in handouts of the animals, plants or nature topic we are talking about. Fun games, songs and activities are done throughout the day to have interaction with new friends and nature. Older students can take notes, which is a great way to add to their Life Science Studies.

Earth Connection's Primitive Skills course teaches valuable wilderness survival skills using the stone age technologies that were common to of all of our ancestors. Students will learn how to build a leaf hut shelter, without tools or cord; how to collect and prepare tinder and kindling; how to do friction fire making with the bow drill; primitive tool making; primitive water gathering and purification; four primitive traps unique to this course; how to make a rabbit hunting stick; and the skinning, cleaning and cooking small game (typically squirrel). Primitive fishing, Edible plants, primitive cooking, food preservation and storage, wicker basketry from vines, plant and tree bark string, and burning out wooden bowls and spoons will also be covered. This course is designed to provide skills for living primitively in the wilderness; and this course is a student and staff favorite.

This course and other courses can also be scheduled during the weekdays for one-on-one training, or small groups.

At any time, anywhere, things can go wrong and you might find yourself in a survival situation. You can survive 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. To stay alive, you must find or build a shelter, obtain "safe" drinking water, start a fire and gather food. This class will teach you how to build a simple shelter using natural materials, start a fire without matches, and find safe drinking water.
