Please join 2024 Leg Leader, Officer Johnathan Anderson, along with the Kaua'i Police Department and many friends and volunteers of Special Olympics Kaua'i as they escort the 'Flame of Hope' in this year's Troy Barboza Special Olympics Torch Run. Opening Ceremonies and Track & Field Meet will immediately follow the Torch Run. 

Torch Run day of registration begins at 7:15 AM, run/walk will begin at 7:45 AM, both at Vidinha Stadium. Anyone and everyone are welcome and invited to take part in the event.

Whether you run, jog or walk this is an easy and worthwhile event to support Kauai Athletes. Torch Run will begin at the Vidinha Stadium, run past the police station, southbound on Kapule; right turn by the old gym and into the stadium for a victory lap! The short mile is rated for everyone.

Torch Run will kick off the opening ceremonies to the Track & Field Meet. Athletes will compete in fourteen various events that includes the 200 Meter Dash, Standing and Running Long Jump, Shot Put, Softball Throw and Unified Sports® relay events -- Unified Sports® combines Special Olympics Athletes with athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training and competition.

The Torch Run was created in 1981 by Chief Richard Lamunyon of Wichita, Kansas, who, along with a couple of deputies, ran the first torch run for Special Olympics. The torch is now carried by law enforcement officers - referred to as 'Guardians of the Flame' - in every state and in more than 40 other countries.

Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park Storm Response—April 2024

In response to the April 12 Wailua River flood, please kokua with the Morgan's Ponds cleanup in Lydgate Beach Park.

Volunteers will be admitted to Lydgate Beach Park starting 7:30 AM, Saturday morning, April 27, 2024 to work on clearing away the mass of driftwood from the beaches at Morgan's Ponds.

Many hands make light work, so please help spread the word!

We should be able to clear the bulk of the dry driftwood from the beach if ~150 — or more —volunteers help out.

To enliven this cleanup event, we'll be giving away A LOT of valuable prizes that were donated for the Earth Day in Lydgate Park 2024 community workday, which we had to cancel. Be sure to sign up for the prize drawings!

We'll also serve snacks & lunch (Crispy Chicken Asian Salad with Vegan option and Gluten Free option).

Thanks to the generosity of the Flip Flop Shop we'll be passing out free work gloves you can keep.

Please BYO rake if can, water bottle, and wear shoes & sun protection.

The Kauaʻi Police Department (KPD), in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), is collecting unused, unwanted, or expired medications for National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Apr. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at KPD headquarters located at 3990 Kaʻana Street, in Līhuʻe. You are invited to utilize the anonymous drive-thru drop-off service on the east-facing side of the building.  Tablets, capsules, liquids, patches and other forms of medication – prescription or nonprescription – will be accepted. New or used needles and syringes will not be accepted.  This service is free and anonymous, and no questions will be asked.

Every Saturday morning, St Catherine Food Bank is distributing fresh fruit produce meat, fish or chicken, bread and snacks from 11 AM to 12:30 in the soccer field at Saint Catherine’s church in Kapaʻa. Walk in or drive through.

Some of the non-disaster uses being considered for these buildings are a fire station & emergency administrative space, vocational training, and workforce childcare.
