ASU West Dumpster Dive

(Wed, 04 Nov 2009 10 AM - 6 PM MST) During this event, people will empty garbage from bins around campus to show students how much of their waste is actually recyclable. Participants will be able to sort out any recyclable items, calculate their carbon footprint, and receive information about sustainability. Our hope is taht students can walk away from the event with ideas on how they can become active in these efforts. To do this, the school is inviting local organizations, campus departments, and clubs to set up information tables. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our services, resources, and volunteer opportunities to West campus students, faculty, and staff.

ICO meeting

(Wed, 04 Nov 2009 7 PM - 9 PM MST) Inner City Outings (ICO), a community outreach program of the Sierra Club, provides disadvantaged urban youth and adults with positive outdoor experiences. Through the ICO program, wilderness areas become accessible to youth of varied economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, hearing or visually-impaired individuals, and the physically disabled.

Interested in getting involved? The Phoenix ICO group meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at Lux Coffee House -- 4404 N. Central Ave, Phoenix. You can ride the light rail!

(Sat, 14 Nov 2009 All Day) The Friends of the Sonoran Desert National Monument (FSDNM), the Anza Trail Coalition (ATC), Sierra Club, and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will be repairing a portion of the historic Anza Trail damaged by careless OHV users on November 14, 2009 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. BLM archaeologist Cheryl Blanchard will be coordinating the restoration. Volunteers must register for the event at www.OutdoorVolunteer.org. Directions will be available at this site. Volunteers are required to dress appropriately for working outdoors, wear sturdy shoes (no sandals or flip-flops), bring a hat, work gloves, and a water bottle or canteen.

Rio Salado Habitat Restoration

(Sun, 22 Nov 2009 8 AM - 12 PM MST) Join us for an invasive weed pull (really a dig) at the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area, which stretches for five miles along the Salt River just south of downtown Phoenix. Once a dump site, the area is now a lush riparian corridor that supports a variety of wildlife and recreation opportunities. Snacks, drinks, gloves, and some tools provided.
