In 2008 seven Baha'i leaders were arrested by the Iranian state.  Following closed juridical proceedings, the seven were sentenced to twenty years in prison.  The imprisonment of these seven Baha'is follows, and may be a part of,  wider state-led violations of the human and social rights of the Baha'i community in Iran. This talk is intended to share information on these violations, and makes reference to an international campaign marking the fifth year of the imprisonment of the seven Baha'i community leaders. 

This lecture seeks to draw out some of the implications of the new research agenda for fascist studies that Constantin Iordachi recently proposed in a special issue of the journal East Central Europe. This lecture seeks to show how we might make better sense of the fluidity, uncertainty, and open-endedness of that web of interaction. Above all, it seeks to show how the long controversial 'totalitarianism' category can be conceived more flexibly to serve the new agenda.

One can loosely say that the Georgian ecclesiastical literature is a scion of Greek language spiritual writing. The history of its reception goes back to the Early Byzantine period. Since then, the imposing 'Eastern Christian miracle' became an inherent part of the Georgian culture and, specifically, of literature. In characterizing it, one has to operate with the paradigmatic contexts of interculturality and identity, tradition and innovation, as well as the cultural process providing transmission, appropriation and transformation.

I will discuss the formation of a middle-class identity through the consumption of clothing in contemporary Russia. During the Soviet era, conceptions ofthe body and of middle-class fashion were framed by the notions of being cultured and by Soviet taste; during the 1990s, such concepts were framed by 'culturedness' and 'civilization'. My research is based on in-depth interviews conducted in the city of St Petersburg.

I will present and discuss recent findings from ERP studies of face perception and face recognition in DP. Contemporary philosophers of mind tend to subscribe to a dichotomy between so-called empirical and so-called analytic or a priori methods of philosophical research, which, leads to a current chasm: Armchair versus Empirical philosophy of mind. I argue that this is a false dichotomy and the idea of a chasm is misplaced. I will base my argument on the early history of neuroscience, namely, the birth experimental neurophysiology, where we can identify an essential a priori component in scientific reasoning. I then apply those pieces of reasoning to some extant problems in the philosophy of mind, thus offering some elegant solutions to them.

The city of Edirne was the official Ottoman capital city for at least half a century after the defeat of Sultan Bayezid I. Yet until quite recently, the city has received limited attention from historians, limited to a relatively small number of topics. This talk will explore Ottoman Edirne with two goals in mind. First, to consider the question of Edirne's historiographical status. Second, Edirne receives closer examination, as a first step to recovering and perhaps reconceiving the city in its early Ottoman period.

For more than 10 years, the CEU Career Fair has been the most important and visible annual career program, an excellent opportunity for alumni and students to develop their career skills and seek out job opportunities worldwide. In the same time, the event has created a platform for international employers (in many cases represented by CEU graduates) to build their recruitment brand on campus and recruit for their companies and organizations.

This presentation will begin with a brief review of the literature on the impact of social capital investment timing from both effectiveness and cost perspectives. We will then relate our experience on the timing issue using evaluation results from four different human and social capital development programs implemented in the United States.

The talk will present and critically evaluate two promising areas of research emerged that have so far received little attention in work on biopolitics: the so-called new materialisms, which shifts the accent from 'life' to 'vibrant matter' (Jane Bennett), and work on “biocapital” that investigates the systematic relations between (neo-liberal) capitalism on the one hand and the emergence of a biotech industry with new products and services based on biotechnological knowledge on the other.

This will be an 'iconology of insanity' that tries to go beyond mere iconography (the tabulation of images of madness) to ask questions such as 1) why do we wish to see and represent mental illness? why make a spectacle of madness? 2) can madness be seen or represented at all? what is the epistemological status of images of insanity? 3) how have different media inventions (easel painting, photography, cinema, digital media) changed the conditions of representation of psychopathologies? 4) what is the besttherapeutic framework for the understanding of madness in the wake of the anti-psychiatry movement and the dominant paradigm of pharmacological treatment? In other words, what is madness in a post-Foucauldian, post-Deleuzian episteme

Dynamic Selection and the New Gains from Trade with Heterogeneous Firms

The paper shows that the gains from trade can be decomposed into: static gains that equal the total gains from trade in an economy without technology spillovers, and; dynamic gains that are strictly positive. Since trade raises growth through selection, not scale effects, the positive growth effect of trade vanishes when firms are homogeneous. Thus, firm heterogeneity creates a new source of dynamic gains from trade. Calibrating the model to the U.S. economy implies that dynamic selection approximately triplesthe gains from trade.
