While Muslims have a surprisingly good reputation in Western Europe, the headscarf is opposed by a large majority. Several arguments are developed in this paper to investigate why people make a difference between Muslims as a group and their religious practices.

Contemporary philosophers of mind tend to subscribe to a dichotomy between so-called empirical and so-called analytic or a priori methods of philosophical research, which, leads to a current chasm: Armchair versus Empirical philosophy of mind. I argue that this is a false dichotomy and the idea of a chasm is misplaced. I will base my argument on the early history of neuroscience, namely, the birth experimental neurophysiology, where we can identify an essential a priori component in scientific reasoning. I then apply those pieces of reasoning to some extant problems in the philosophy of mind, thus offering some elegant solutions to them.

We use a unique data-set from Indonesia on what individuals know about the income distribution in their village to test theories such as Jackson and Rogers (2007) that link information aggregation in networks to the structure of the network.

I investigate what happened to post-socialist European countries, whose
hypertrophic, premature, essentially Bismarckian welfare states remained relatively unchanged until 1989. Unlike in Western Europe, here, the transition was arguably much swifter.The presentation will try to delineate the major concepts underpinning this process and present, as an example, the interaction between labour market and old-age insurance reforms in Poland.

The Shaping of Early Ottoman Edirne

The city of Edirne was the official Ottoman capital city for at least half a century after the defeat of Sultan Bayezid I. Yet until quite recently, the city has received limited attention from historians, limited to a relatively small number of topics. This talk will explore Ottoman Edirne with two goals in mind. First, to consider the question of Edirne's historiographical status. Second, Edirne receives closer examination, as a first step to recovering and perhaps reconceiving the city in its early Ottoman period.

The talk will present and critically evaluate two promising areas of research emerged that have so far received little attention in work on biopolitics: the so-called new materialisms, which shifts the accent from 'life' to 'vibrant matter' (Jane Bennett), and work on “biocapital” that investigates the systematic relations between (neo-liberal) capitalism on the one hand and the emergence of a biotech industry with new products and services based on biotechnological knowledge on the other.
