The Smithereens at the Mayo Center in Morristown

Dr. Brown will share the evolution of how Nast’s image of Santa Claus has spread around the world and become central to the world’s first global holiday. It was Nast who gave the figure his rotund shape; red and white wardrobe; surroundings of holly, tinsel, toys, and joviality in the mid-19th century. Through the first Christmas cards, department store window displays, newspaper illustrations, and theater presentations his portrayal of Santa Claus became a national and international figure.

The Thomas Nast’s American Christmas exhibit will also be open for viewing and there will be an opportunity to tour the museum’s latest exhibit The Spirit of Thomas Nast: His Life and Legacy which shows illustrator Nast’s works, both the familiar and the rare. Refreshments will follow the lecture which is free with admission

The Museum is open for tours to the general public Wednesdays, Thursdays & Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The last tickets for admission are sold at 3 p.m.
Admission is $6 Adults; $5 Seniors. Students; 12 years and under and museum members are free.
