Equality March Texas & LGBT Community of North TX Marriage Equality [RALLY]

Details:
On November 3rd 2009, Voters will decide the fate of Same Sex Marriage in Maine and the fate of the Domestic Partnership Law in Washington State. Referendum 71 in Washington and Question 1 in Maine both seek to strip American LGBT Citizens of rights and protections currently afforded to them through state laws. November 3rd also marks the 1 year anniversary of the passage of Proposition 8, the measure which took away marriage rights from LGBT People in California.

On November 4th, 2009 Equality March Texas and the LGBT Community of North Texas will host a Marriage Equality Rally to:
- Express our continued outrage a year after Prop 8!
- To celebrate/ protest rights preserved/ lost in Maine and Washington!
- To continue to demand changes in Marriage Equality in the state of Texas!
- To kick start The DFW Week of Initiative, November 1-8 and begin the work of the Equality Across America Campaign! www.equalityacrossamerica.org

Official Tryouts are set to start for the 2010 Dallas Diamonds women’s professional football team. Women ages 18 and up are encouraged to come out to Pennington Field in Bedford and see if they have what it takes to be a Diamond. Football knowledge is not required, just a desire to work hard, learn and most of all have fun.

Wear comfortable athletic shoes, workout attire and bring cleats if you have them.

Additional tryouts are scheduled for October 25 from 2-4 pm as well as a final date November 14th from 8-12.

The time is near and Transgender Day of Remembrance will be observed in Dallas next Friday, November 20th @ 7 pm @ SMU. EMT is helping to spread the word about this important event and we need your help! Starting Saturday night, we will begin passing out flyers on the Strip. We need volunteers (at least 2/day) for Saturday night (7 to 9pm), Sunday afternoon (4 to 6pm), and Thursday night (7 to 9pm). The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester's murder - like most anti-transgender murder cases - has yet to be solved.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgendered people, an action that current media doesn't perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for Transgender members of our community in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds us that Transgender Americans are sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives allies a chance to step forward with the Transgender community and stand in vigil, memorializing those who have died by anti-transgender violence.

The half-day conference, which will take place at Spring Creek Campus of Collin College, will feature keynote speaker The Honorable Carol Kent of the TX State House of Representatives. As the Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Victim’s Rights & Violence Against Women, Rep. Kent is uniquely qualified to speak about these issues as well as to provide a legislative update.

Representatives from the beneficiaries of the conference, Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas, Denton Co. Friends of the Family, & Hope’s Door in Collin Co., will also be speaking. Topics covered will include signs of abuse, legal issues surrounding abuse, & what we as individuals and groups can do to help.

The conference is sponsored by Democratic Women of Denton Co., TX Democratic Women of Collin Co., & North Dallas TX Democratic Women.
