Safekey Program, After School Recreation Program

(Sun, 01 Nov 2009 All Day) City of Mesquite Recreation and Parks Department offers the Safekey Program, K-5 Grades, an after-school recreational enrichment program, at the Virgin Valley Elementary School. Registration is ongoing at the Safekey site during Safekey hours (Monday through Friday from dismissal time, 3:15pm until 6:15 pm; sorry, no hourly rates).

Discounts for more than one child in a family are available for weekly enrollments. Safekey families are eligible for multiple-child discount rates. Financial assistance may be available for parents/guardians who meet the income qualifications. All questions and concerns for the income qualifications will be handled by the Clark County Childcare Assistance Program, 702-668-4814 or 1-888-387-0090. The Veterans Administration announced that the Vet Center Program has arrived in Mesquite. Starting in October, counselors from the Vet Center in Las Vegas will be at the Arcon Medical Facility at 830 Hafen Lane from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. every Friday except for the fifth Friday of months with five weeks.
The Vet Center Program was established by Congress in 1979 out of recognition that a significant number of Vietnam veterans were still experiencing readjustment problems. Vet Centers are community based and a branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The goal of the Vet Center program is to provide a broad range of counseling, outreach, and referral services to eligible veterans.
The program is particularly interested in reaching those modern era Veterans from the Reserve and National Guard who have served in the Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The memorial begins at 7:45 with the playing of Reveille played by Carolyn Whaley, followed by bagpipe music provided by Dennis Hangey.

The colors will then be presented and the American flag lowered to half mast, followed by an opening prayer from Rev. Lois Hedden. Cecil Donaho will welcome guests, followed by remarks from guest speaker Al Littman.

The ceremony will end with a rifle volley from Mesquite's Veterans Honor Guard, with the playing of "Taps" by Whaley, and a closing prayer by Hedden.

Boy Scouts will conduct their annual food drive Nov. 11-21. To help in stocking the Salvation Army Food Bank and Virgin Valley Community Food Bank.

Special yellow bags for food donation will be available from Scout Troops and at City Hall and Mesa View Hospital. Additional food bag pickup and drop off locations may be announced at a later date.

Food donation bags should be filled with a variety of canned goods including vegetables, fruit, and stew as well as entrée-type items such as spaghetti.

Filled bags may be turned in at City Hall or Mesa View Hospital until Saturday, Nov. 21. Also, in neighborhoods where permitted, the Boy Scouts will be picking up filled bags hung by residents on front doors from 4 to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Oasis Chiropractic Center is giving local residents a chance to get their spines closer to that position while helping to raise money for Mesquite's proposed Veterans Center.

From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., the clinic will be offering spine adjustments for $20.

All of the funds will go to the building fund for the Mesquite Veterans Center, which is to be built on Hafen Lane near Riverside Road.

The National Alliance On Mental Health (NAMI) has launched a weekly support group in Mesquite called NAMI Connection.

The new weekly NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group offers an inclusive place to learn from other’s experiences, share coping strategies, and offer encouragement and support.

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Groups are free, open to all adults, and offered in Mesquite on Thursdays at noon at the Mesquite Mental Health Center each week.

The center is located at 61 North Willow St., Suite 4.
