Make a Child's Sweater of an Old Wool Sweater

Make a nice warm sweater just in time for the winter for your child out of an old adult felted sweater. We will add embellishments with other wool and wool fleece. You will treasure this one of a kind item. Bring at least two felted wool sweaters (hot wash and dry before coming to class) and you are ready to go. Sewing machines and patterns provided. Free Childbirth Education classes

Patrice Nichole Byers, who is training to be an International Childbirth Education Association instructor, is offering this childbirth education class to our members for free! It's her goal to educate parents and help them make informed decisions so that they can have the type of birth they desire and to be able to trust in the mothers body when the time comes. Byers has designed her course so that it prepares parents for labor, postpartum and their newborns. The course will also cover signs of labor, stages of labor and delivery, developing a birth plan, labor coping techniques, positions for labor/pushing and more. It is difficult for some people to imagine why a family would choose to have a home birth. Is it safe? Is the laboring woman putting her feelings and comfort selfishly above the safety of her baby? The truth is that parents who choose to birth at home are usually people who are well educated about the risks and benefits of homebirth and want the freedom to make choices about all aspects of their care. Pregnancy and birth have a huge impact on women’s identity, self image, and confidence as a mother. Midwifery care is individualized holistic care that focuses not only on the physical aspects of childbearing but also the emotional, social and spiritual aspects. Claudia Breglia of Born at Home, a local homebirth midwifery service, will talk about how midwives help parents make the best choices for their families, support physiological birth and intervene only as needed to ensure the safety of both mother and baby. Claudia has been a midwife for over 15 years and has caught babies in 6 different states. She is licensed in California, a Certified Professional Midwife and is the President of the California Association of Midwives. She believes that every woman, regardless of her situation, can benefit from the superior care given by midwives.

Gather up those items that you have fond memories of your child wearing: birthday outfits, coming home clothes, favorite t-shirts, your old sling material, a special blanket or burp cloth, etc. Be prepared to cut them up and fashion them into something truly special.
