<title><![CDATA[High Noon Talk]]></title>

<span class='regularcopy'><font face='Times New Roman' size='3'><span style='font-size: 12pt'>Dr. Loriene Roy, an Anishinabe (Ojibwe) enrolled on the White Earth Reservation, a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, and a Professor at the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin will discuss her fight against illiteracy within the Native American community through the &quot;If I Can Read, I Can Do Anything&quot; program, a national reading club for American Indian youths.&nbsp; Since its inception in 1999 the program has helped thousands of children in Texas and across the nation. In 2010, Roy will participate in &quot;Operation Teen Book Drop&quot; that partners with reservation schools and young adult reading blogs to increase the availability of quality, appropriate reading materials for American Indian children.&nbsp; Professor Roy will be joined by graduate students in the School of Information for a discussion on the impact of the program within the community and how community members can take action to help. <a href='http://www.thestoryoftexas.com/the_museum/audio/loriene%20roy.mp3' title='http://www.thestoryoftexas.com/the_museum/audio/loriene%20roy.mp3'><br /></a></span></font></span>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Wells Fargo First Saturdays]]></title>

The Museum is offering free admission to the Museum Exhibits from 2-6 pm on the first Saturday of each month with <span class='emphasized_copy'>Wells Fargo First Saturdays</span>. <p class='default_copy'><br />In addition to the free exhibits, visitors can enjoy a chance to &quot;go behind the plexiglass&quot; with the Explore the Story stations. </p><p class='default_copy'>Also, you can take advantage of the TEXplorations Family Story Time from 2-4 pm. This interactive reading program is presented by Austin Public Library Youth Services. </p>]]></description>

<span class='regularcopy'>A great variety of American Indian art forms will be demonstrated during the Museum&#39;s 3rd annual collaboration with Great Promise and the Austin Powwow, celebrating American Indian Heritage Month. Spend the afternoon with fiber artists, storytellers, singers and dancers, and learn more about the diversity of cultures. Highlighted artists include Vanessa Jennings, a beadworker and National Living Treasure; Lorraine Herder and Edith Herder Simonson of Black Mesa Weavers; Karen Bellinghausen who creates fine regalia representing many different traditions; and Sequoya Guess, a traditional storyteller of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. Bring the family to enjoy storytelling, hands-on activities and art making, music, and dancing.</span>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Opening of A Legacy of Quilts: The Briscoe Center's Joyce Gross Collection]]></title>

<em>A Legacy of Quilts: The Briscoe Center&rsquo;s Joyce Gross Collection</em>, on exhibit at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum for the first public exhibition in Austin.&nbsp; The exhibit spans more than 100 years of this enduring American art form and features 29 quilts made approximately between 1844 and 1950, as well as antique fabrics. Each of the quilts in this exhibit is an expression of one of America&rsquo;s most beloved artistic traditions; each is a story written with fabric, needle, thread and loving hands. Included in the exhibit are award-winning quilts from the 1930s, red and green appliqu&eacute; quilts that were popular in the mid-19th century, a Hawaiian flag quilt and two remarkable album quilts.]]></description>
