'We Remember Them: A Memorial Service'

Every year on or near the Celtic festival of Samhain we hold a memorial service honoring those loved ones and friends who have passed beyond the veil.

We are looking for a lot of people to take on roles for this ritual. Please contact Sonja by October 8 if you would like to participate. E-mail list@gaiadreaming.org for more information.

Even if you don't want a specific part, please come and join us. We will have a memory altar, where you can display pictures or other items of your loved ones. And during the service people are invited to share stories of their loved ones. This is a moving service which often brings tears to the eyes, but light to the heart.

We welcome everyone, regardless of belief. Our loved ones live on in our memories.

Matt will be reading a sermon by UU minister, Emily Gage. This sermon examines the second principle of Justice, Equity and Compassion in Human Relations. Emily is a UU parish minister in Joliet, Illinois, as well as a member of the UU Minister's Associations Ministerial Fellowship Committee.

Our congregation—indeed, our movement—has become a place where we can celebrate our “difference” together. But sometimes we content ourselves with “preaching to the choir.” How can we be “different” in a way that makes a difference? How can we, individually and as a faith community, answer the “so what” question? Our pastor, Evan Young, offers some thoughts . . . and some challenges. Also: Rev. Malcolm Himschoot, transgender UCC minister and subject of the documentary film Call Me Malcolm, will offer brief remarks.

Announcement: Call Me Malcolm will be shown Sunday, November 15, at 3pm in Bentley Hall room 124 on the OU campus. A panel discussion with Rev. Malcolm, Erin Upchurch of Equality Ohio, and Evan Young of UUFA will follow.

An intergenerational story and celebration introducing the UU Service Committee's annual program of giving. The service uses a modern update of the time honored tale, The Stone Soup, to illustrate the importance of sharing resources. Creatively acted/presented by Lois Whealey and the UUFA Youth Group!

People are invited to bring in a favorite soup vegetable, either chopped in smaller pieces or partially cooked, enough to finish cooking in 15 minutes. Thanks.

In light of the celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States, we often take time to enjoy food, family, friends and give thanks for that which we are most thankful for. Why do we wait for one particular day in which to do this? During this service, everyone will be given an opportunity to share what they are most thankful for, and be given a charge of moving from one day a year of "giving thanks" to an entire year of "living thanks". Shifting this mindset can bring increased satisfaction with life and can give us the power to connect with others in a new way. What, or who, are you most thankful for each and every day?
